Livestock Water for Droughts

Six stock water or alternative livestock watering systems were installed this winter in Scott and Shasta Valleys.  Funding for these projects was provided by California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The purpose of these systems is to provide drinking water for livestock from groundwater sources to reduce surface water demands during drought periods.

Keeping clean cool snow melt in our streams is a valuable method for enhancing salmon habitat and recovery.

Working with our partners the Siskiyou Farm Bureau and the Montague Water Conservation District, SVRCD selected the projects and managed the construction processes.

Each system has been designed to optimize the landowners’ existing infrastructure and goals. This may include new troughs, pipeline, well, pump and power supply. This is another way that ranchers and farmers can support ecological processes and maintain a viable agricultural business.

Several types of troughs were requested and installed to meet the landowner’s needs.

Thank you to our partners, funders and most importantly, the private landowners who voluntarily stepped up and participated in this project. Pictures were taken by Keith Smith, Judy Novy, Dan Hayden, Warren Farnam and SVRCD Staff.

Contact SVRCD if you would like information about this type of work for your operation in the future.  SVRCD serves all of Siskiyou County in partnership with the three other RCDs in our area.
