The Shasta Valley RCD has forestry and conservation implementation/construction projects that range from fuels reduction, fencing, meadow restoration, stock water, instream work, irrigation studies, and erosion control work on federal, state, and private land within our district. 

Our projects are funded by various grants and may have specific labor requirements.

Current Projects 

Slater Restoration Project:

This fuel mitigation project is located in Happy Camp in Siskiyou County, California. The treatment will protect habitable structures in and around the community. The objective of this project is to provide immediate fuel mitigation to reduce fuel loading within the project area and to allow for prescribed fire lines to be created to facilitate underburning. Funding for this project is provided by the USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry through the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts.

 Spencer Fuel Treatment III-Handwork & Tethered Mastication

 The project will remove brush species, dead and dying trees, and up to 90% of juniper creating reduced surface fuels, ladder fuels, and creating a well-spaced canopy. The project will enhance rangeland habitat, promote the reintroduction of native grasses, and promote the development and the reestablishment of oak woodlands. Funding for this project is provided by CALFIRE.

Klamath River Community Fire Restoration- Handwork Group 4

This Klamath River Community Fire Restoration Project will reduce hazardous fuels and restore forest in the burn scar of the McKinney Fire. The Klamath River Community Fire Restoration project occurs in the Klamath River Community along Highway 96. Treatments will focus on the removal of dead/dying hardwood and conifers along the road and adjacent to structures. Treatments will include hand removal of hazardous vegetation and dead trees.  Mechanical operations will include the use of a chipper equipment. Cut material will be chipped on site, chips will be kept out of meadows and riparian areas. Manual treatments will include chainsaws, loppers and pruners. Piling and burning will be limited to areas where chipping is not feasible. The project goals include community protection, forest health and resilience, and wildlife habitat maintenance.

West Mount Shasta Forest Resilience Phase II - Luginbuhl Ranch Preserve Handwork

This project is located within Western Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County, California. This is a collaborative and partnership directed strategic planning effort bringing together Siskiyou Land Trust and the Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District. The project will focus on the handwork treatment of approximately 77 acres of forest area at Siskiyou Land Trust’s Luginbuhl Ranch Preserve. The project is intended to 1.) improve forest health and resilience to severe wildfire, drought, disease, and pests, 2.) reduce wildfire risk for nearby communities and infrastructure, 3.) enhance ecological biodiversity.

McKinley GNA Mastication

The Shasta Valley RCD is advertising a bid opportunity for 386 acres of mastication for the Mckinley GNA Mastication Project. 

The project is located on the Scott River Ranger District of the Klamath National Forest in Siskiyou County, California.

There will be a pre-bid tour on Wednesday September 2, 2026. We will meet at 11am at the Salmon-Scott River Ranger Station in the back parking lot at the intersection of Highway 3 and Scott River Road in Fort Jones. Bids are due in person or by email no later than 2pm on September 11, 2026.
